Who is David Datro Fofana, Chelsea's new Ivorian recruit?

Chelsea’s latest recruit, David Datro Fofana certainly evokes little to the average observer. However, this precocious phenomenon which was already evolving with the selection of Côte d’Ivoire at the age of 17 (2 selections), has piled up the goals in the Norwegian championship under the colors of Molde in recent months. Trained in Abidjan City, Datro Fofana built a very young name for himself, especially during his loan in 2019 to AFAD (Ivorian D1) where he was already panicking the counters with his chronic efficiency.

Swift, confusing and very fast, Fofana had not escaped the radars of European clubs since several Dutch or even Belgian teams had looked at him at the time. Performances which had even allowed him to know his first cape with the selection of Côte d’Ivoire in September 2019 during a qualifying match for CAN 2020, lost 2-0 against Niger.

He could have signed in Angers

If David Datro Fofana has made Norway his entry passport to Europe, the possibility of seeing him sign in Angers in 2021 has long existed. Abidjan City, his training club, had also announced that it had reached an agreement with the Angevin club, which was ultimately null and void since it was going to Mölde. “At first I liked what Angers offered me, but Molde was a real crush for me. I had been here before and the way I was received made me change my mind. My heart leaned”had declared the person concerned following his transfer.

A choice that he was quick to justify in the training club of a certain Erling Haaland, since on February 18, 2021, Fofana scored his first goal in his very first match in Europe. Substitute at the kick-off of the round of 16 first leg of the Europa League against Hoffenheim, the young Ivorian, then 18 years old, scored the equalizing goal (3-3) nine minutes after coming on.

A hitman’s composure

If he only played 304 minutes of play in Tippeligaen (Norwegian D1) during his first season at Molde, and without a single goal, he left more than one goalkeeper speechless during the second. And his goal against Sarpsborg on May 26 could be likened to a birth certificate, since he scored 14 goals and provided 5 assists in the next 20 league games. As the saying goes: appetite comes with eating, as evidenced by his goal which went viral in August 2022 against Kisdvarda (Hungary), during a qualifying match for the Europa League Conference. Kick of the sombrero followed by a crazy stride of 50 meters, concluded by a subtle dive on the opposing goalkeeper.

By joining Chelsea this winter, Fofana is now the second biggest sale of a Norwegian club (€12m), just behind John Obi Mikel (€20m), who left Lyn Oslo in 2006 to join… Chelsea. A big fan of his elder Didier Drogba, the native of Ouragahio intends to follow in his footsteps and could also wear number 15, Deadly Drogba’s first number with the Blues.
