This Saturday, the two Manchester clubs face off to define the color of the city until their next confrontation. The opportunity to look back on the records of one of the most fiery derbies in Europe.
On the eve of this highly anticipated derby between the two Manchester teams, the two teams have already met 188 times with 77 wins for the Red Devils against 58 for the Citizens and 53 draws.
With 11 goals, including some legendary ones, Wayne Rooney is ahead of other prestigious names like Sergio Agüero (9) or Eric Cantona (8) and Ruud Van Nistelrooy (6).
Scorer at the age of 18 years, 4 months and 20 days, Marcus Rashford is ahead of prestigious names in this precocity record. In particular Cristiano Ronaldo (19 years and 9 days) or Wayne Rooney, third, and who had scored at the age of 19 years, 3 months and 20 days.
On April 16, 2011, nearly 90,000 people gathered at Wembley to watch the FA Cup semi-final won by Manchester City on a goal by Yaya Touré.
The Citizens have also twice achieved the feat of sticking a 6-1 to their best enemies. The first time on January 23, 1926 and then again more recently, in 2011, as if to signal the end of the Manchester United era at the start of the 21st century.
The Welsh international, emblematic player of the Red Devils, is a regular in the derbies which he has played 36 times. He has 963 appearances for Manchester United, his only club.
Between 1989 and 2011, the Red Devils went unbeaten in 16 successive meetings between the two teams in what will go down as the most prolific period in the club’s history.
We had to wait until this season (2022/23) to witness the most prolific Manchester derby in its history with no less than nine goals scored and an explosive victory for the Citizens with a final score of 6-3 on October 2, 2022. It was the last meeting between the two teams.
During this last confrontation between the two Manchester clubs, Erling Haaland had marked the meeting and the history of derbies with his mark by scoring three goals and delivering two assists for Phil Foden.
And since this last derby between the two teams was that of all records, here is another one: Phil Foden and Erling Haaland both scored a hat-trick, unheard of in the history of derbies and which had only happened twice before in the Premier League for that matter.
Jermain Pennant and Robert Pires did it during Arsenal – Southampton in May 2003 then Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy repeated the feat during Leicester – Southampton in October 2009.
