West Indies Campaign Medal – Marine Corps

The West Indies Campaign Medal was presented to personnel of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps who carried out maritime service in the West Indies theater during the Spanish-American War. The decoration was seldom given since most personnel were awarded the Sampson Medal for their service in the West Indies, and the two awards were prohibited from being issued to one individual for the same period of service.

The West Indies campaign Medal was discontinued in 1913 after an agreement with Spain to no longer display Spain’s national colors on U.S. Navy service medals. The Spanish campaign Medal replaced the West Indies Medal and all recipients were able to exchange the original award for the new version.
